It is that time of the year again where we as MCSA members are part of the select few who get to enter into Jan du Toit’s kloof. We were lucky to get a toasty (but not scorching) weekend to explore up the river. Over the last few years it has been interesting to observe the changes to this section. Heavy rain falls washed away trees and moved boulders around and after that a fire went through the whole kloof. The beauty of the kloof has however not changed even though it looks a bit different these days.
Our party boulder-hopped our way up to the overhang where we would spend the night. We went further up the river to explore and have a few swims. There are no pictures that will do this magical place justice. The water is still freezing but the excitement of swimming in a remote mountain pool can not be resisted. Our party included some long standing members, including our Chairman, as well as members who recently joined. It seems like it is the kind of place that always leaves you in awe no matter if it is your first visit or if you have been numerous times. After a full moon night we had a lazy morning by the pool near the overhang and on the way out we stopped in at the waterfall up the side branch as we worked our way down the kloof. Keep an eye on the Calendar for more trips coming up soon and try to go see this kloof this summer.
