We had ideal hiking conditions for this fun route along a ledge system overlooking Orange Kloof. The 11 of us set off from Constantia Nek and ascended the Constantia Corner route connecting with the Hole-in-the-Wall route at the De Villiers dam. After a short while we reached the start of Caveman’s Overhang and the fun started with various forms of rock obstacles necessitating removing our packs occasionally to squeeze through the narrow cracks. Eventually we reached the top of the ridge overlooking the indigenous forest and descended into the ravine. The sense of remoteness increases as one moves further up the ravine that eventually drops into forested caverns where we had lunch. The return route took us further up the ravine where we joined up with the ‘Hole-in-the-Wall route again and returned to Contantai Nek along the cement road and short cut path. We were back at the cars by 3pm.
