Spilhaus Ridge & Caveman’s Overhang

Leader: Dennis Cope 23 February 2019 Spilhaus Ridge & Caveman’s Overhang

Despite a blustery southeaster, 12 of us set out from Cecilia at 07h00 in heavily overcast conditions. This made for great hiking conditions although the ridge was completely shrouded in cloud. Cushioning of the wind allowed us an easy walk up to the start of the Spilhaus Ridge pitches. Four members of the group had not done the route before and it’s always an extra pleasure watching someone get a ‘lifer’. All the pitches were well managed by all, with the experienced scramblers assisting where necessary. We stopped for a bevy break near the top just after being treated to a valley of King proteas; more than 120 flowerheads and buds.

On reaching the road we walked on the beach of De Villiers Dam which looked less than half full en route to the Caveman’s Overhang path. The traverse was taken slowly to ensure that everyone experienced all the bends, squeezes and special framed views. This required a bit of policing as some tried to duck out of the gymnastics. We dropped into the wormhole tunnel and lunched comfortably on the northern side of the ridge with a view over the Victoria Dam.

After lunch we descended into the north eastern section of the Enchanted Forest and took our time savouring the quiet and taking one or two excursions. Always a wonderful experience.

The clouds and mist had dispersed by now and we descended via the Overseer’s Hut and Cecilia Ridge, returning to the cars at 15h30.
