We experienced the Cederberg at its best in ideal hiking conditions. Our full compliment of 16 climbed Winterbach Peak (1536m) on 29 March and then Luna Peak (1675m) on 31 March. A day spent in-between at Tuitjieskraal was made special by Tillie Burger showing us a vantage point where we had an amazing panorama of the main Cederberg summits.
The 12km Winterbach route requires less of a walk-in compared to Luna Peak and is made circular by ascending Tierkloof and descending via Eerstekloof. We encountered light rain on the way back – the result of a cold front that gave us the superb hiking conditions!
Luna Peak, the highlight, was done on a wind free day – this made negotiating the heavily mushroomed rock summit a lot easier. The summit cone was barely large enough for a group photo.
On our return we visited Luna Tunnel that cuts through the summit block – this provided a shady lunch spot. After hiking for 15km we returned to Earth and our cars!
The 3 day meet was filled with camaraderie enhanced by the wonderful Cederberg experience.
