Some trepidation may have been in the minds of the fifteen hikers gathered at the start, where rain jackets and pack covers were hastily donned. Nevertheless the mood was cheerful: we made a start on a wait and see basis. Happily the rain soon dispersed leaving a low lying mistiness which made for pleasant walking temperatures.
After passing St James cave and Nellie’s pool, we reached the beginning of our exploratory challenge and everyone seemed up for the bushy and slightly hit and miss route up to the (mostly invisible) tea cave. Sadly, in the mist the promised views of wonderful rock formations and False Bay were not forthcoming. We rejoined the regular route to Kalk Bay peak, descending via the Crassula path before finding a lunch spot in the valley below. The group returned to the start by 13.30.
