Early in the morning, 22 eager participants gathered on the steps at the start of the India Venster hike. Ages ranged from 17-80 years old and experience from zero trad to very experienced.
After introductions and gear distribution all headed up to the Lower Buttresses of Table Mountain.
The weather was turning out a bit hotter than forecast so shade was sought against Arrow Buttress to refresh before heading out in groups of three and one caterpillar team of four.
Routes were chosen by leaders and the novice and rustier tradsters were given pointers on all matters trad related.
Most parties chose Arrow Buttress with Frasers Arrow (12) receiving the most attention. Second Helping (13) and Sparkplug (12) were also climbed according to artistic interpretation of the guide book.
Parties on Venster Buttress enjoyed India Giver (15) and India Rubber (12).
Abseils were enjoyed and safely done by all and teams returned to ‘base camp’ with much happiness after their efforts. The heat deterred most from a second route and teams slowly made their way down.
Many thanks to the seven leaders for volunteering their time, gear and kind advice and keeping the novices safe.
And thanks to all the enthusiastic climbers who felt like heros every time the cable car glided over, albeit it slightly sunbaked lichen covered ones.
