Following a dream of dry rock in a long winter, an escape plan was hatched to sport climb in Montagu. With its multitude of cliffs offering climbs of all grades, reliable blue sky and a comfortable campsite, it was an obvious choice. De Bos Camping has lovely facilities and was our base for the weekend.
The first day was spent at Legoland, an arduous 2 minute walk in. Twelve climbers congregated at the base, made friends, found climbing partners and climbed as many routes as their arms would allow. A few folk could only drop in for a few few routes but still had fun.
Cool conditions enabled us to stay there all day then all headed back to the campsite to refresh and socialise round a braai.
And await the return of a team of two who had defected to climb trad on Eagles Folly, a 7 pitch grade 17 route.
A not too early start took us to The Farm on 62. An entertaining drive and a scenic walk got us to comfortable platforms to climb on very different rock from the previous day to fathom new techniques.
There were experienced climbers dusting off the cobwebs, moderately experienced climbers learning new skills and people who had never climbed outdoors before delighting in the experience.
Many thanks to Henk Engelbrecht and Werner van Dyk for the help leading and to all the climbers for testing themselves and drawing together to help all have a fantastic weekend.
