Honouring Stephen Tooke

Thursday Meets 6 February 2017 Honouring Stephen Tooke

We are deeply saddened to share the news that Stephen Tooke, a Cape Town Section member and regular meet leader, had a fatal fall on Noordhoek Minor Peak on Thursday 2 February.

An enthusiastic hiker, Stephen introduced many members to some of Table Mountain’s lesser-known routes, leading or co-leading occasional Thursday meets.

He particularly enjoyed the more challenging hikes, involving ‘off route’ explorations and caving. He also had a keen interest in rock art, searching for paintings in caves and overhangs across the Cederberg.

Sadly, on last Thursday’s Club hike, Stephen fell to his death while free-climbing a scramble section on Noordhoek Minor Peak.

The Club extends our sincerest condolences to Stephen’s wife, Adrienne, his brothers, Alan and Martin, and all members of his family. In addition, our thoughts are with those who were on the hike on Thursday, as well as with all of Stephen’s friends, who have lost such a gentle soul and wonderful companion.

Stephen loved the mountains, and died while participating in his favourite activity.

A service will be held on Friday, 10 February, at 11h00 at St John’s Church, Wynberg.
