The chilly morning made for a brisk start to the hike, it seemed we were all keen to get into the sunshine on the north flank of Kleintuinkop. Once we had rounded the corner onto ‘Dead Man’s Path’, we saw many splendid Protea Cynaroides in flower.
The ascent to Dassies’ Kasteel was negotiated with care, stopping for tea under the overhang. Continuing up through the scramble section we were soon at the summit, where conditions were perfect for a sociable lunch break. There was a short diversion to Stonehenge, an area with fascinating rock formations featuring eroded windows below massive boulders.
We paused briefly at Bertie’s Balcony on the descent before rejoining the track back, observing massed ericas en route in colorful contrast to the surrounding shades of green. It was pleasing to see the streams flowing strongly after the rain.
Thanks to everyone for their participation: such a perfect day for the mountain.
