Our party set off from Constantia Nek up Constantia Corner at about 07h15 in warmer weather than predicted. Being a holiday there was a large cheerful group just ahead of us, but we managed to pass them without too much trouble, and from there on we had the mountain to ourselves. The King Proteas near The Camel were in their prime and de Villiers reservoir was full to the brim. At the dam we branched off onto the magic Caveman’s Overhang route which never disappoints with its rocky ledges and crevasses to be negotiated along with bits of old Afromontane forest reminiscent of Tolkein! The Overhang overlooking Orange Kloof with views all the way down to Hout Bay and beyond was the perfect tea/Breakfast spot. From there we scrambled up to the ridge and disappeared into a hole, slithered through the cave into the lovely overhang on the other side, worthy of a few minutes recovery time! From here is was homeward bound traversing across the Fairy Forest and onto the track past the Victoria and Alexandra Dams and down to a warm Constantia Nek by about 11h40 … fortunately before the real heat of the day struck!
