We originally intended to hike up Spilhaus Ridge but the Cape Town winter weather had different plans in store for us. By Friday it seemed evident that we would likely encounter some rain the next morning and members were advised that the hike would definitely proceed but would possibly morph into a waterfall hunting expedition. That was indeed the case as 9 enthusiastic Mountain Club members donned multiple layers and ponchos, departing Cecilia Forest parking at 07:45.
We were fortunate that it wasn’t unbearably cold and windy, with large parts of our route sheltered against the wind. The soft, drizzling rain seemed to scare off the usual weekend crowds, with the exception of a few trail runners out to get their fix. Spilhaus Ravine was enchantingly beautiful with tree ferns all over and the water stream creating a perfect soundtrack. After gaining some height we passed the split towards the Spilhaus Ridge route and continued onto Cecilia Waterfall, an amazing sight as always. From there we continued towards Contour Path and visited the often-missed, beautiful waterfall in Vaalkat Ravine. Next stop was the spectacular Skeleton Gorge waterfall, also known as the cataract. As can be expected this time of year, especially following the good rains we’ve had, it was breathtakingly beautiful. Definitely one of the most impressive waterfalls that Table Mountain has to offer and a spot that seems to draw one closer, mesmerising you to linger because it’s good for the soul.
We continued along Contour Path and then went off-trail to check out the weir along the lower section of Window Gorge. From there we tackled the last stretch along the Jeep track / mountain bike track and everyone was safely back at the parking area just before 11 am. It was indeed a lovely morning out, proof that one doesn’t need perfect weather to enjoy our beloved Table Mountain.
