Eleven of us were about to set off at Teresa Avenue on our hike when we were greeted by three smartly attired police officials. The friendly inspector in charge introduced the group as members of the tourist protection unit, recently established by the City Of Cape Town to enhance safety on the mountain and elsewhere in the city popular with tourists. They had been patrolling further up the mountain. After a chat and a photo shoot with them we set off on our walk. It was another chilly morning and the mountains above were covered in clouds. By the time we got to the Pipe Track we had warmed up and headed for Corridor Ravine. At the bottom of the ravine we turned off on a fairly level path, overgrown in places that essentially hugs the base of Corridor Buttress. The haul up the gravelly path to the top of Oudekraal Ravine was easily accomplished by our group.
We enjoyed a leisurely tea in a sheltered spot and watched the mist rolling in and out over the nearby peaks. Lion’s Head could be seen in the distance. An easy walk back along the Twelve Apostles trail took us to the top of Corridor Ravine where we undertook the relatively easy descent back to the point where we turned off to Oudekraal. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch at the overhang overlooking Slangolie Ravine with views across to the sheer cliffs traversed by the Three Firs path. We arrived back at the cars at 2pm in beautiful sunny weather.
