Not Junction Peak scramble!

Leader: Don Jepson 10 October 2024 Not Junction Peak scramble!

We were back to winter conditions which did not align with Junction Peak scramble, so we bailed out and enjoyed a sociable tea at the Mountain Club hut on Table Mountain instead!

We had ascended Diagonal in the hope that conditions would improve, but they did not and we encountered a cold northerly wind on top together with thick mist. Passing the MCSA hut on our way to Junction Peak was just too tempting to ignore! The vegetation was wet which would have meant that the lichen covered rock ‘obstacle course’ on the slopes of Junction Peak would have been difficult to negotiate.

I had hoped that the weather conditions may improve during the time that we spent in the hut but they were just as bad when we set off. The cold wind also did not produce an appetite for any further adventure on top of the mountain.

Kastelen Poort beckoned and we made our way down, only exiting the mist at the half way ‘platform’. The 9 of us were back at the cars by 11:30am, rejuvenated after our brief encounter with the harsh elements!
