Who knew, 3 months ago when the schedule was drawn up, that it would rain on 3 December?! But it did!
Hell’s Gate is not advisable in the rain, so we played it safe and only went as far as where the kloof narrows into towering rocky walls. Even so we stepped carefully over slippery wet rocks underfoot. But the kloof has its own magic, and the drizzle actually enhanced it.
With the low cloud the new members in the group had to imagine the surrounding mountains! Fortunately, the bright pink watsonias and deep blue aristeas drew our attention away from the wet. And of course, there was plenty of time to chat and get to know each other better.
Stella decided that since a swim had been suggested it should be done, and in she went, while the rest of us stood in the drizzle having a snack.
As the day progressed the cloud lifted to reveal those mountains, but we still arrived back at the cars rather wet from the undergrowth.
