Our group of eight set off from Theresa Avenue on a blustery morning. The Cape Doctor was in full swing. As usual in these weather conditions there were sections where we were protected from the wind. We had to scramble around a bit to find the route as we made our way around the base of Corridor Buttress but that all added to the enjoyment of the walk.
The climb up Oudekraal Ravine was quite hard work as we were climbing into the teeth of a chilly and intense gale. It was quite difficult to stay on our feet at times. We managed to find a reasonably sheltered spot near the top where we stopped for tea with a lovely view of Lion’s Head in the distance. The Apostles path was also very exposed in places and we were thumped by some good gusts. The route down Corridor Ravine was windy to start but grew more peaceful as we descended. Once we got onto the contour path the group started shedding layers as it was pretty hot. We stopped for lunch at the overhand with a great view of Slangolie Ravine.
We were back at the cars just after 1pm on a calm and beautiful day. It was there that I had a nice long chat with Des Herron who I had not seen for a long time. He cruised up Oudekraal: quite remarkable for someone of his age. I believe that he joined the club in 1918 just after the first world war although that might be fake news.
