On Friday afternoon, the MCSA Cape Town Section hosted its first official Friday meet, led by hike leader Mogamat (Mo) Londt. The chosen route was Fresnaye Crack (aka Twirly-Whirly route)—a lesser-used variation that offers a more adventurous and scenic alternative to the standard Lion’s Head trail.
The group set off in the late afternoon under clear skies and mild weather. The route diverges from the main path early on and features a combination of traverses, scrambling, and moderately exposed sections. Mo provided guidance at key points, ensuring all participants navigated the route safely. The trail offered stunning views, with the shifting light of the setting sun enhancing the visual experience.
The group reached the summit ridge shortly after sunset. Headlamps were used for the descent via the standard route, which was completed smoothly and without incident.
This meet marked the first of the Friday evening hikes. Interested members can join a dedicated WhatsApp group where weekly updates will be shared, confirming whether a hike is scheduled for the upcoming Friday. Details on how to join this MCSA Friday Evening Hikes WhatsApp groupare included in the weekly MCSA-CT: What’s On email, sent out every Monday morning.
