Five sure-footed hikers tackled the Suikerbossie Circuit after a few weeks of heavy rain. The day offered reprieve with clear skies and a full moon welcoming the sun.
Starting from Ruyteplaats, we warmed up on the contour path sharing good humor before reaching Myburgh’s Waterfall Ravine. Here, sounds of rushing water lured us under the indigenous canopy as the world behind faded and we entered a new. Winter months bring a different beauty to these places; nature’s water features are on full display and everything is full of life.
Shortly after starting the ascent, we reached Myburgh’s Waterfall to perfect the group selfie. For fellow hikers the journey ended here but we pressed on with hopes of getting a little wet. As the ravine’s walls narrowed curtains of water cascaded down towering cliffs above. It soon became inevitable to wade through the cool mountain water with one naturalist electing to go barefoot.
As we exited above the ravine we wished Myburgh’s Waterfall Ravine would not end, but a sunny heathland and promises of a tea break kept us on track. A little further on a sheltered outcrop of rocks overlooking the Apostles warmed us up before returning via Llandudno Ravine. Endless views and good stories brought us back to Ruyteplaats with a morning well spent.
