We’re incredibly proud that the Mountain Club of South Africa’s Cape Town Search and Rescue team has been recognized with the Mayor’s Medal for Extraordinary Bravery. The medal was presented at the City of Cape Town Civic Honours Ceremony on 14 November 2025.
For over 130 years, our 70-strong volunteer team has responded to emergencies in mountains, wilderness, and high-risk areas – entirely free of charge. Their skill, courage, and selfless service save lives every day. The award was proudly accepted on behalf of the team by our Co-convenor, Brent Russel, and MCSA Cape Town Chairperson, Anthea Von Wieringen, to celebrate this incredible recognition.
A heartfelt thank you to every volunteer who makes this possible – you embody the very best of the MCSA.
The description of the award in the Honours Ceremony brochure can be read here, and the full awards brochure can be found here.
