Following the December 2023 fires in the Deep South, SANParks closed the trail for rehabilitation and only announced its reopening in 2025. With access finally restored, it was the perfect opportunity for a long-awaited return to this spectacular route.
A lucky group of 13 hikers set off under glorious conditions, with clear skies and with a familiar breeze accompanying the day’s outing. The party made steady progress to Swartkop, where a relaxed breakfast stop was briefly interrupted by the arrival of a few polite young baboons.
The traverse southwards delivered its trademark rolling hills and ever-expanding views across the Cape Point section of the peninsula. We waved to our “Brocken spectres” before the steep descent over icy rocks required careful footing and added a welcome sense of adventure to the day.
After 5.5 hours on the trail, the group arrived at Smitswinkel with a strong sense of achievement, having completed a memorable return to one of the area’s most scenic hikes.
