Reserve Peak & Split Rock koppie

Leader: Sally Swart 13 August 2026 Reserve Peak & Split Rock koppie
The hike took place in perfect conditions, starting with a fine, fresh morning in Skeleton Gorge. At the top of the gorge, we proceeded to the overhang at Castle Rocks to enjoy our tea stop, before tackling Reserve Peak. Observing the work being done on the dam wall below, some concerns were voiced about whether there would ever be rain enough to refill it.
Moving onwards, the Ash Valley path lead us to a short scramble up Split Rock koppie. An early lunch seemed an appropriate way to enjoy the views southwards, while one member was game enough to get onto the summit rocks. The way off the koppie was a rather messy, off path affair, which definitely needed a sense of humour! Hopefully all was forgiven once we rejoined the path near Rooikatkloof.
The descent of Cecelia Ridge was achieved at a varied pace, and by 14h30 all thirteen of us were back at the start. The day was described by one member of the group as “a spot of summer in the middle of winter…”
