It was yet another trip to Hell’s Gate and the Basin, fully booked. But it almost didn’t take place! Late on the previous afternoon the fire that had started far from our route in Hout Bay, became a threat to our meet. After several phone calls to different numbers, the final one at 20:00 suggested we do not hike because of the wind change. The helicopter had also just crashed, but we were advised later that fortunately there were no fatalities.
Ever hopeful, with the group was on standby for a final, very early morning call at 4:30 on the day of our meet! The fire services advised that the fire was under control and we could hike!
The weather was ideal. The waterfall was dry, so a request has been made to do that route in mid-winter to experience the contrast! 3 of the group swam in one of the very cold pools. Lunch was, once again, in a special spot near the old pump house in the Basin, after which we followed the historical pipe track, before the gradual ascent on the jeep track back to the cars.
