Rocklands Bouldering Youth Camp

The weekend was filled with a lot of good climbing and great companionship and the kids experienced the cameraderie of the bouldering community. We had a number of firsts this weekend:

• First climb outdoors on real rock
• First bouldering outdoors on real rock

We had some amazing climbs as well, namely:

1. Georgi Dorward sent her nemesis from last year, the 6b+ “Big Ears” on the Consequence boulder
2. Tom van Sittert sent his project from last year, the 7a “Let it Die”
3. Joseph Rosendorff and Nicholas Allan flashed “Girl on our Mind” and “Coal Chamber” (both 6b+)
4. Nicholas Allan also flashed “Up the Spout” (6a+) and sent “Let it Die” (7a)
5. Joseph Rosendorff worked “Minki” (7b) and “The Arch” (8b+) at The Arch Boulder in Campground
6. Sarah Adams sent “Bad Boy for Life” (5c), found new beta for “Ice, Ice, Baby” (5c) and sent “RSA” (6b)
7. Ethan Coleman, Jack Vermaak and John Adams sent “RSA” (6b) and “Up the Spout” (6a)
8. Ethan Coleman and Jack Vermaak both worked “Coal Chamber” (6b+) but couldn’t make the last move
9. Matthew Collier-Reed sent “RSA” (6b) and “Up the Spout” (6a), “Ice, Ice, Baby” (5c) and the 5c at Boulder J at the Teapot Boulders in Campground
10. Finchie Lapin and Georgi Dorward sent “RSA” (6b) the 6b on Consequence Boulder and the 5c at Boulder J at Teapot Boulders, Campground. Both girls also worked “Girl on our Mind” and “Coal Chamber”

The rest of the weekend presented us with perfect weather to enjoy our itinerary below.

Friday 1st July:
02:00pm All depart Cape Town for Rocklands
06:00pm All arrive at Bushman’s Cave in the Cederberg
06:30pm Unpack and Prepare Dinner

Saturday 2nd July:
08:00am Breakfast
09:00am Buy permits at de Pakhuys for the weekend
09:30am Drive to Plateau where kids can find a project to work for the day/morning
01:30pm Lunch at boulders
02:30pm Stay at Plateau for kids to try some other problems
05:30pm Drive back to Bushman’s Cave
06:30pm Prepare Dinner

Sunday 3rd July:
08:30am Breakfast
09:30pm Pack up and Drive to Campground for the day
12:30pm Lunch in Campground
01:30pm Depart Rocklands and drive back to Cape Town
