Earlier in the week, the forecast had been threatening rain for Sunday morning. As is often the case with mountain forecasts, things changed as the weekend approached. By Sunday, the gloomy predictions had disappeared, leaving us with excellent hiking conditions. Fourteen hikers from both the MCSA and ComeHike communities gathered at Constantia Nek at 08:00, ready for a day on the mountain.
We began with the familiar jeep track before entering the forest and making our way steadily upward. Before long, we left the established path behind and headed onto Spilhaus Buttress. This section provides plenty of entertainment, with steep scrambling, airy positions, and just enough exposure to keep everyone focused. Fortunately, the group was exceptionally strong and moved efficiently through the scrambling sections, making light work of the route.
Our speedy group reached Reserve Peak in just two and a half hours, where we stopped for a break. The crisp winter air and comfortable temperatures made for ideal conditions, and from the summit we were rewarded with sweeping views across False Bay, the southern suburbs, and the surrounding mountains. It was the perfect setting to relax and appreciate just how far we could see.
After soaking up the scenery, we began the return journey via Ash Valley. Despite covering a little over 10 km and tackling some enjoyable scrambling along the way, the group’s pace never really dropped. We completed the route in just four and a half hours, well ahead of schedule.
By early afternoon we were back at Constantia Nek with tired legs, plenty of smiles, and another successful day on the mountain.
Spilhaus Buttress to Reserve Peak delivered everything we could have hoped for: great company, enjoyable scrambling, and spectacular views from Reserve Peak.
